Welcome to Local Anaesthetics

Local Anaesthetics is a free teaching programme, aimed at Foundation Year Doctors (FYs) who are considering a career in anaesthesia. It is run by anaesthetists, for future anaesthetists.

Our aim is to increase exposure to anaesthetics, inspiring people to apply to specialty training who might not otherwise consider it. We also hope to give opportunities to enhance the portfolios of those looking to apply.

To do this, we introduce FYs with anaesthetists within their current hospital. In doing so, the FY will have a contactable, local and friendly faces who can help to organise taster days, undertake relevant projects and assist with applications.

In addition, Local Anaesthetics will run a regular virtual teaching programme on interesting and relevant topics to anaesthetics. This can include application & interview advice, or insights into potential career directions within anaesthetics.

Are you already an anaesthetist looking to help? Please see the link at the top of the page.

Why should I take part?

It is never too early to start to consider career pathways, and thus tailor portfolios & experiences. Furthermore, many FYs do not get the chance to spend time within anaesthetics, which is a huge shame! It is relevant to all other specialities.

If you’ve already polished your portfolio, or you simply don’t know where to start, the programme will be able to offer something to everyone.
